Reconstruction Oral Cavity and Oropharynx Using the Free Scapular Flap

Abstract
The free scapular flap was first described by Dos Santos in 1980. Since then Barwick, Gilbert, Hamiltonn, Urbaniak and Baker reported their cases with good results.
The free scapular flap is nourished by the cutaneous brandches of circumflex scapular artery. This artery passes through the triangular space that is bounded by teres minor, teres major and long head of triceps.
The free scapular flap has many advantages, especially during the dissection of cutaneous flap, a portion of scapular bone or a portion of teres major muscle can be included according to the necessity of surgical defects.
The kinds of flap we used for the reconstruction were cutaneous flap in 8 cases, musculocutaneous flap in 1 case, osteocutaneous flap in 2 cases and osteomusculocutaneous flap in 1 case.
The results were excellent at donor site and recipient site.
